10.0 CAD module, exercise Nr 4

 

The fourth exercise is the drawing of a protractor. As for the previous ones (except N°1). We don’t go in to details of each manipulation that you have already performed.

 

· After starting the CAD, click on «the new file» and enter the following values : X = 180 Y = 130 Z = 2 , grid space will be : 5 mm. Keep the other parameters in default.

· Save your file naming it : Ex4.CAD and think of saving it regularly.

· It’s normal that you don’t see the grid because it’s display is visible only if the spacing is at least 20 pixels. However, the fact of not seeing it doesn’t mean that it’s not active ; the incremental couplings and displacements are functional.

· You are going to start the construction by the protractor base, by drawing a three-segment polyline.

· Click on the icon «polyline».

· Click on the icon «digital data capture» or press the key «enter» (keyboard shortcut).

· On the tab «absolute», enter the values : X = 10 Y = 40

· Validate the window by «OK» then validate the point by a click on the left mouse button.

· Click on the icon «digital capture» or press the key «ctrl + outside arrow» (keyboard shortcut).

· On the tab «relative», enter the values : X = 0 Y = -30.

· Validate the window by «OK» then validate the point by a left click.

· Click on the icon «digital capture» or press the key «ctrl + outside arrow» (keyboard shortcut).

· On the tab «relative» enter the values : X = 160 Y = 0

· Validate the window by «OK» then validate the point by a left click.

· Click on the icon «digital capture» or press the key «ctrl + outside arrow» (keyboard shortcut).

· On the tab «relative» enter the values : X = 0 Y = 30

· Validate the window by «OK», then validate the point by a left click.

Stop the construction by a click on the right mouse button.

 

Now you are going to construct the base inside straight line of the protractor.

Always with the tool «polyline» click the constraint «copy of Y» then indicate one of the two upper points of the polyline that you have just drawn.

You have frozen the position Y of your first point.

Click on the icon «digital capture» or press on the key «enter» (Keyboard shortcut).

On the tab «absolute», enter the values :

X = 40 (the value «Y» is already frozen by the constraint : «copy of …).

Validate the window by «OK» then validate the point by a click on the left mouse button.

Click on the icon «digital capture» or press on the key «ctrl + outside arrow» (keyboard shortcut).

On the tab «relative», enter the values : X = 100 Y = 0

Stop the construction by a click on the right.

 

Now you are going to draw a circle that crosses this line through its center, in order to construct the protractor inside lump.

Click on the icon «circle by center and radius».

 

Click on the constraint «center of…»

Point to the straight line that you have just constructed.

The center point of the circle will be automatically placed in the center of this line.

Validate with a left click.

Click on the icon «digital capture» or press the key «ctrl + inside arrow» (keyboard shortcut).

On the tab «polar» enter the radius 10 mm in the field distance (don’t enter anything in the field «angle»).

Validate the window with «OK», then validate the circle with a left click, then a right click.

In order to keep only the upper part of the circle, you are going to proceed to a double incision of the circle and the straight line, in order to delete the useless parts of the drawing.

Select the circle

Click on the control «incision» (sub-menu of the tool menu).

Then, in one selection «window», select at the same time the lower part of the circle and the inside segment of the circle.

Delete them with the key «supp» on the keyboard.

 

Now, you are going to construct the inside and outside semicircles of the protractor.

 

For this construction, you are going to use the tools : «arc» and coupling «magnetic objects».

Click on the drawing icon «arc».

Place the first point on the outside part of the straight line.

Validate the first point with a left click (coupling «magnetic objects» will insure a perfect positioning).

Place the second point on the left outside part.

Validate the second point with a left click.

Place the third point (center) at the same position of «Y» as the previous two points (the magnetic grid permits a easily placement).

Validate the third point by a left click of the mouse.

Proceed exactly in the same way for the construction of the inside semicircle.

 

Now you are going to draw the hole of the center and the viewfinder of the protractor.

Click on the icon «points».

Click on the constraint «center of..»

Point to one of the three arcs of the circle.

The point will be placed automatically on the central position.

Validate this position with a left click.

Now, place this point on a different plan.

Click on the right button (you come back to selection mode and the point is selected).

Click again on the right button to call the contextual menu.

Click on «property» then on the tab «drawing».

Select : color : cyan, thickness: 1 mm, plan: 1.

Validate with the button «Ok».

In order to draw the viewfinder more easily, zoom in the protractor center zone, this will allow seeing the grid.

 

Now, draw the viewfinder 10 mm x 10 mm by relying on the grid.

Click on the icon «polyline».

Draw a vertical and horizontal line of 10 mm each passing through the center point.

You can quit the zoom mode by clicking on the zoom page.

Now, you are going to draw the horizontal graduation.

Make a zoom window on the left lower angle.

 

You are going to change plan and the color for the graduation drawing.

Click on the icon «properties» or click on the right button (warning : no object should be selected at this moment).

In the tab «drawing», choose : color : blue, thickness: 0.18, plan: 2.

Those parameters will be used per default ; they appear in the information bar (horizontal bar at the button of the screen).

Click on the icon «polyline».

Click on the icon «digital capture» or press the key «enter» (keyboard shortcut).

On the tab «absolute», enter the values : X = 11 Y = 11

Validate the window by «OK», then validate the point by a click on the left button.

Click on the icon «digital capture» or press the key «ctrl + outside arrow» (keyboard shortcut).

On the tab «relative», enter the values : X = 0 Y = 1.5

Validate the window by «OK», then validate the point with a click on the left button.

 

Stop the construction with a click on the right mouse button.

Now proceed to four duplications.

Click on the right mouse button (you go back to selection mode and the segment is selcted).

Click again on the right mouse button to call the contextual menu.

Click on «relocation».

Enter : X = 1 Y = 0

Validate the duplication and enter «4».

Validate the window with «OK».

The first five graduations are now drawn, extend the last graduation by 1.5 mm.

To perform this operation, use the edition points.

Select the last graduation (5mm)

Click on the icon «edition points».

Two small blue squares appear at the extremities of the segment.

Click on the upper point.

Click on the right mouse button to call the contextual menu.

Click on «digital capture».

In the tab «relative», enter : X = 0 Y = 1.5

Validate with the button «Ok».

The graduation has been increased and now in easures 3 mm.

 

In order to get the complete horizontal graduation, now you are going to duplicate the five graduations that you have just drawn on all the length of the protractor.

Go back to mode «object selection».

Select the five graduations.

Click on the right mouse button to call the contextual menu.

Click on «relocation».

Enter : X = 5 Y = 0

Validate the duplication and enter «31».

Validate the window with «Ok».

Quit the zoom mode by clicking on zoom page.

 

The horizontal graduation is drawn now, but you have to delete the last graduation that is superposed to the line of the right border.

Make a zoom window on the right lower border.

Select the last graduation by making a window selection on the right border of the drawing (warning : it is not visible because it is superposed to the polyline representing the right border).

Once the graduation is selected, delete it.

 

Now, draw the outside angular gradual.

Quit the zoom mode by clicking on zoom page.

Make a zoom window on the left border of the rounding.

 

 

 

As for the horizontal graduation, you are going to start by drawing the first five graduations, then by the expansion of the fifth and the polar duplication of all of it.

Click on the icon «polyline».

Click on the icon «digital capture» or press the key «enter» (keyboard shortcut).

 

• Sur l’onglet « absolu » saisissez les valeurs : X = 11 Y = 40

On the tab «absolute» enter the values: X = 11 Y = 40

Validate the window with «Ok» then validate the point with a left click of the mouse.

Click on the icon «digital capture» or press the key «ctrl + outside arrow» (keyboard shortcut).

On the tab «relative» enter the values: X = 1.5 Y = 0

Validate the window with «Ok» then validate the point with a left click.

Stop the construction with a right click.

Now you are going to proceed to four polar duplications.

Click on the right mouse button (you go back to selection mode and the segment is selected).

Exit from the zoom mode by clicking on «zoom page».

Click on the right mouse button to call the contextual menu.

Click on rotation.

Enter the value «-1°» in the field «angle», validate the tick «show the center», then the tick «duplication» and enter : 4 duplications.

Validate the window with «OK».

Now, point to the rotation center which is the central point of the protractor that you draw previously.

Click on the central point (the magnetic coupling facilitates the action) then click on the right.

The four duplications are performed.

Go back to zoom mode in the zone of the first four graduations.

 

As for the horizontal graduations, extend the first graduation of 1.5 mm by using the function: «point edition».

Select the first graduation in mode «point edition» then select the right point.

Click on the right mouse button to call the contextual menu.

Click on «digital capture».

 

In the tab «relative» enter: X = 1.5 Y = 0

Validate with the button «Ok».

The graduation has been increased and now measures 3 mm.

In order to get the complete angular graduation, you are now going to duplicate the five graduations that you have just drawn on the 180° of the protractor.

 

Go back to mode «object selection». 

 

Select the five graduations.

Quit the zoom mode and go back to page mode.

Click on the right mouse button to call the contextual menu.

Click on rotation.

Enter the value «-5°» in the field «angles», validate the tick «show the center», then the tick «duplications» and enter: 36 duplications.

Validate the window with «OK».

 

Now, point to the rotation center which is the central point of the protractor you drew before.

Click on the central point (the magnetic coupling facilitates the action) then click on the right.

The 36 duplications are performed.

 

 

Now, zoom on the right part in order to delete the four graduations exceeding 180°.

Make a zoom window on the right zone.

Select the four additional graduations.

Delete them with the key «supp» on the keyboard.

Quit the zoom mode and go back to page mode.

Now, you are going to draw the inside angular graduation proceeding exactly in the same way as for the outside graduation.

Zoom in the left inside the protractor.

 

Click on the icon «polyline».

Click on the icon «digital capture», or press the key «enter» (keyboard shortcut).

On the tab «absolute», enter the values: X = 39 Y = 40.

Validate the window with «OK» then validate the point with a click on the left mouse button.

Click on the icon «digital capture» or press the key «ctrl + outside arrow» (keyword shortcut).

On the tab «relative» enter the values: X = -1.5 Y = 0

 

 

Validate the window by «OK» then validate the point with a click on the left button.

Stop the construction with a right click.

Repeat the same operations as for the outside graduations (duplication by four, extension of the first segment, duplication of the five graduations, deletion of the exceeding graduations).

 

Now, you are going to draw the numbers of the angular values, every thirty degrees, you will also use for this construction the duplication/rotation.

Start with the outside values.

Zoom on the button left side at the first graduation level.

 

Now, adjust the characters size and font.

Being careful that any object is select, click on the icon «properties» or press the button «enter» (keyboard shortcut).

The property window appears.

In the tab «text» click on the button «font».

Choose the font «charly standard» (that should be by default).

Then change the size to : 3 mm.

Validate the window «text» with «OK» then the window «properties» with «OK».

 

Click on the icon «text edition» 

Then place the pointer at position :

X = 15 Y = 40

You can use digital data capture but with the zoom and grid coupling ; the operation is easy with the help of absolute and relative coordinates indications in the horizontal bar, at the screen bottom.

Click on the left mouse button.

Enter «0» in the window then validate with «Ok» then click on the right.

 

Now, you are going to center correctly this text; this operation will be done in the contextual menu «property».

Select the object.

Click on the right to call the contextual menu.

Click on «properties».

Place the button « Origin Selection « on the center/left point.

Enter in the values «positions» X = 15 Y = 40

Validate with OK.

Now, you are going to center correctly this text; this operation will be done in the contextual menu «property».

Select the object.

Click on the right to call the contextual menu.

Click on «properties».

Place the button « Origin Selection « on the center/left point.

Enter in the values «positions» X = 15 Y = 40

Validate with OK.

The three duplications are performed

Now, select each text in order to give the right value, 30°, 60° and 90°.

Unselect the selected object (by clicking on the left mouse button in a non-drawn zone) then zoom on the position 30°.

 

Select the number (0) at position «30°».

Click on the right mouse button to call the contextual menu.

Click on property, then on the tab «text» enter the number «30» in the field «text».

Validate the window with «OK».

 

The number «30» has replaced the number «0».

Proceed in the same way for the values : 60° and 90°

In order to facilitate the reading, perform a 90° rotation on the number 90.

Zoom on position «90°» then select the number «90».

Click on the right mouse button to call the contextual menu.

Click on «properties».

Place the button «selection origin» on the point : center.

Validate with «OK».

Click on the right mouse button to call the contextual menu.

Select : «rotation».

Enter the value «90°».

Don’t validate the buttons «show the center» and «duplication»

Validate the window with «OK».

The number «90» is now horizontal but it is slightly shifted on the bottom.

Now you are going to raise it by moving the mouse, (since the selection frame is magnetized on the grid, the operation will be easy and accurate).

Place the cursor on a number contour.

Move the object upwards while pressing the left mouse button until coupling the selection frame on the grid step, immediately above.

Release the mouse and unselect the object, now it is well placed.

In the same way, you are going to draw the three missing outside graduation values : 120°, 150° and 180°.

Go back to zoom «page» then zoom on the right bottom at position : 180°

Click on the icon «text edition». 

Then, place the pointer on any place on the screen.

Click on the left mouse button.

Enter «180» in the window then validate with «OK».

Correct this text centering. This operation will be done in the menu «property».

Click on the right button to quit the mode «capture» and select the object.

Click again on the right mouse button to call the contextual menu.

Click on «property».

Place the button « origin selection « on the point : center/right.

Enter in the values «positions» X = 165 Y = 40

Validate with «OK».

 

The value «180°» is now perfectly placed and centered; you are going to make a polar duplication of this number.

Quit the zoom mode and go back to page mode.

Click on the right mouse button to call the contextual menu.

Click on rotation.

Enter the value «30°» in the field «angle». Validate the tick «show the center», then the tick «duplication» and enter : 2 duplications (the value «90°» is already done !).

Validate the window with «OK».

Now, point to the rotation center which is the central point of the protractor that you drew before, then click on the right button.

Click on the central point (the magnetic coupling facilitates the action).

The 2 duplications are performed.

As before, select the two duplications one by one in order to give them the right values, that is, 150° and 120°.

Now, proceed exactly in the same way for the inside angular graduations with reversing the direction.

Make a zoom window at the left bottom of the protractor.

 

Click on the icon «text edition» 

 

Then place the pointer at any place of the screen

Click on the left mouse button

Enter «180» in the window then validate with «OK».

Now, center correctly this text : this operation will be done in the contextual menu «property».

Click on the right button to quit the mode «capture» and select the object.

Click again on the right button to call the contextual menu;

Click on «properties».

Place the button « origin selection « on the point : center/right.

Enter in the values «positions» X = 35 Y = 40.

Validate with «Ok».

 

As for outside graduations, make the three duplications as well as the horizontal placement of the value «90°» by using the same methods previously described (don’t forget to give again the right values to each number).

 

Now, you are going to create the inside graduations of the straight line.

Make a zoom window at the right button of the protractor.

Click on the icon «text edition» 

Then place the pointer at any place of the screen.

Click on the left mouse button.

Enter «0» in the window then validate with «OK».

Now, center correctly this text. This operation will be made in the contextual menu «property».

Click on the right button to quit the mode «capture» and select the object.

Click again on the right button to call the contextual menu.

Click on «properties».

Place the button « origin selection « on the point: center /left.

Enter in the values «positions» X = 145 Y = 40

 

Validate with «Ok».

As for the outside graduations, make the two duplications by using the same methods described before (don’t forget to give the right values to each number).

 

Now, you are going to draw the horizontal graduation. To facilitate this construction, return your drawing 180°.

Select the whole drawing by clicking on «select all» in the edition menu or by pressing on the space bar (keyboard shortcut).

Click on the right button to call the contextual menu, then click on properties.

Click on the central button of «selection origin».

Validate with «OK».

Click on the right mouse button to call the contextual menu, then click on rotation.

Enter: 180° in the field «angle» and don’t tick the boxes «show the center» and «duplication».

Validate with «OK».

 

The horizontal graduation starts on the edge, the first marking will be ten millimeters away, at ten millimeters interval until 150 mm.

 

Make a zoom window on the upper left edge.

Click on the icon «text edition   

Then, place the pointer at any place of the screen.

 

Click on the left mouse button

Enter «10» in the window then validate with «OK».

Now, center correctly this text; this operation will be made in the contextual menu «property».

Click on the right button to quit the mode «capture» and select the object.

Click again on the right mouse button to call the contextual menu.

Click on «properties».

Place the button « origin selection « on the point : center/top.

Enter in the values «position» X = 20 Y = 115

 

Validate with «Ok».

 

Now, you are going to make a relocation/duplication of this number on the protractor width.

Go back to zoom page.

Click on the right mouse button to call the contextual menu.

Click on «relocation».

Enter a value of : x = 10 Y = 0

Tick «duplication» and indicate «14» in duplication number.

Validate with «OK».

All duplications are made. Give the right values to each number (20, 30, 40 etc.).

Be careful: Numbers having a different size, need to be centered after its capture. To do this, you are going to modify the position «X» of each number in order to center it on the grid spacing. The digital position of this spacing is indicated in the horizontal bar at the screen bottom.

Zoom on the second «10» that should be a: «20»

Select it and click on the right mouse button to call the contextual menu.

Select the menu «property».

In the tab «geometry» mark and enter the value : «X» (in this case: 30 mm); the selection origin must be obligatorily at the top in the middle.

Click on the tab «text» and enter «20» in the place of «10».

Validate with «OK».

Click again on the right mouse button to call the contextual menu.

Select again the menu «property».

In the field «X» enter the value that you entered before (that is, 30 mm for this first case).

Validate with «OK».

The number «20» is now perfectly centered; proceed in the same way for other numbers.

 

Once this operation is finished, you can go back to zoom page and turn again the protractor to its original position by a 180° rotation, as described before.

 

Now, it remains to draw the text in the protractor sector. In order to facilitate this creation, you are going to use construction straight lines and curves that you are going to put in a different color and plan.

Click on the icon «properties» or click on the right mouse button (be careful, no object should be selected at this moment).

In the tab «drawing», choose: color: green thickness: 0.18 plan: 3.

Those parameters are used by default; they appear in the information bar (horizontal bar at the screen bottom).

Click on the icon «polyline».

Place the mouse pointer on the central point of the protractor by using the magnetic coupling.

Click on the left mouse button to validate the first point.

Click on the «digital capture» or on : Ctrl + inside arrow (keyboard shortcut).

In the tab «polar», enter: angle: 45° distances : 90

Validate with «Ok».

Validate the point with a click on the left mouse button the stop the construction with a right click.

 

Now, you are going to make a symmetry + duplication of this straight line.

Click on the left mouse button to select the object.

Click on the right button to call the contextual menu.

Click on «symmetry».

In the window «symmetry», tick «any ax» and tick : «duplication».

Validate with «OK».

Designate a symmetry ax. This ax will be vertical, passing through the central point of the protractor.

Click on the central point of the protractor and draw a vertical line.

After validating the second point, the symmetrical duplication is performed.

 

Now, you are going to construct two circles in which the text will be written.

Unselect the object that is still selected.

Click on the icon : «circle by center and radius».

Place the cursor at the central point of the protractor.

Validate the position with a click on the left button.

Click on «digital capture» or on : ctrl + inside arrow (keyboard shortcut).

In the polar tab, enter : distance : 61 (don’t enter anything in «angle»).

Validate with «Ok».

 

Once the window disappears, validate the construction with a left click.

Construct a second circle by using exactly the same method but with a radius : 69, then click on the right button.

 

A large part of the circles are out of the drawing frame; this has no importance.

Make an incision of the circles by the straight lines, in order to remove the useless parts and keep the text zone only.

To facilitate this manipulation, you are going to hide the active plans, except plan 3.

Activate the sub-menu «tracing» in the menu view.

Click in order to inactivate them on the tracings :

- drawing

- text

- plan 1

- plan 2

Validate with «Ok».

Only plan 3 remains visible, on which you are going to work.

 

Select the two straight lines by using the key «shift» to add a selection.

Once the two straight lines are selected, click on the sub-menu «incision» of the menu «tools».

Select «cut all the entities».

The selection frame disappears and the circles are cut at the intersection of straight lines.

Select the lower arcs of the circles as well as the two straight lines and delete them.

 

On some software versions, object distortions don’t apply on circles or arcs; so you are going to transform them into curves.

Select the two arcs, then activate the sub-menu «convert into curves» in the menu: «tools».

The two objects haven’t changed but they have become «curves» entities.

For the same reasons so as the distortion would be done in the good direction (from left to right), you should make a symmetry of these two curves.

Select the two curves, then call the contextual menu with a click on the right mouse button.

Click on «properties».

Place the selection origin in the center.

Validate with «OK».

Click again on the right button to call the contextual menu.

Click on «symmetry»; tick «standard» and «horizontal».

Untick «duplication».

Validate with «OK».

The two objects haven’t changed, but their directions have changed from left to right.

Reactivate all the tracings by clicking on «all» in the sub-menu «tracing» of the menu «view».

Validate with «OK».

Now, you are going to edit the text that will be written between these two curves.

We suggest the text «CHARLYROBOT» in charly standard font. Of course, you may choose another text and another font.

Click on the icon «text» then click in any place of the drawing zone.

Type the text in the edition window, then validate with «OK».

The text size is not important at all; it will be adjusted between the distortion generating curves.

Select the text with a click on the right button, and then click again on the right to call the contextual menu.

Click on « follow object «.

Tick «between curves» and validate with «OK».

Point successively, with the mouse, on the two left ends of the curves; starting with the bottom one then top one.

Use magnetic coupling to point accurately on the curve ends.

Your text is now written between the two curves and is selected. Now, place it again in the text plan with the corresponding color.

Call the contextual menu with a right click.

Select: «properties».

In the tab: «drawing». Select the plan «text» and the color «red» then validate with «OK».

Now, you may delete the two curves by using the function: «selection filter».

In the edition menu, activate the sub-menu: «selection filter».

Choose color: «green».

Move downwards (but don’t close) the window «selection filter» in order to clear the text zone.

Make a window selection including the two curves.

Only the two curves will be selected because they are the only green ones.

Once the curves are selected, delete them with the key «Del».

Close the window «selection filter».

Your drawing is now finished. You can view the different views and of course, you can print it.

Once these controls are performed, you are going to make the CAM operations by clicking on the icon «CAM»
