5.0 CAM module, Exercise level 1

From the CAD module, click on the «CAM» icon.
You will find your drawing, without its details : colors, thickness,
dotted lines, etc… In fact, these details are not useful in CAM module,
because the aim is to create tool path.
The window «dimension, material type and
machining origin» reminds you the volume you have parameterized in
drawing. before validating this window, choose the material family that
will be attributed to your part.
You window is displayed like the following
page.

Click on the arrow to get the list of available
materials and select «soft plastic».
Keep the dimensions and the origin as they are
defined by default.
Validate with the button «OK».
As in the drawing module, you will save your
CAM file in the «File CAM» as «Ex1. CAM».

In the CAM module, two selection modes are used
:
First, the selection «drawing mode» : this
mode allows to select drawing objects that haven’t yet machining
parameters.

Then, the selection «Trajectory mode» : this
mode permits to select objects parameterized into machining parameters.
Therefore, they cannot be selected in drawing to avoid trajectories
superposition on the same object.
When trajectory mode selection is activated,
the mouse pointer is accompanied with a tool.

In order to recognize if a
selected object is a drawing or a machining trajectory, the representation
is different.
In drawing mode, a selected object is in black
bold.

In trajectory mode, a selected object is in a
flashing selection window.

Now, we are going to proceed to the machining
parameterizations.
Select in drawing mode the whole text (make the
selection in «window» mode, By clicking above on the left of the object(s)
to be selected and by shifting the mouse until surrounding the object(s)).
The whole text is now in bold, it is selected.
Click on the right button in order to open the
contextual menu, then open the menu «describe the machining».
The displayed window will permit to choose the
tool that will be used for this first machining.
As the text is an engraving, you are therefore
going to select an engraving tool.
Click on tool 3 «javelin tool 1.5 mm» and
validate with the button «following».

In the following window : «Machining
trajectory» you are going to provide the necessary information for
machining.
In «machining depth» enter the value «0.20
mm» then select «other tool». Validate by the button «following» (the
other buttons remain inactivated in this machining sequence).

The following window gives the result of the
machining expert calculations. These values will be automatically applied
for this sequence.
Validate this window with the button
«Finish».

You notice that the text takes the tool color
attributed to it.
You can also notice that it can’t be selected
in drawing mode. Therefore, if you wish to modify one of the machining
parameters, you will have to make the selection in trajectory mode, then
click on the right button to call the contextual menu and finally select
the parameter to be modified.
Now, we are going to parameterize the four
holes machining.
In drawing selection mode, select a first
circle ( on the left top corner, for example ).

Click on the icon «selection plus» to be able
to perform the other selections without unselecting the previous ones.
Then select the other 3 circles.
Tricks : After selecting the first circle,
press the «shift» key and select the other circles one by one.

Click on the right button to call the
contextual menu.
Click on «Describe the machining».
Select «milling Tools»
Select tool 14 «double-edged tool D = 2mm»
then validate with the button «Following».
In the following window, click on «cut» in
order to get a machining depth equals to the plate thickness: «1.60 mm».
In order to get the exactly diameter of the
holes, you are going to perform an inside cut.
Click on «outlining» then on «inside».
Then validate with the button «following» (the
other buttons remain inactivated in this machining sequence).

The following window gives the result of the
machining expert calculations. These values will be automatically applied
for this sequence.
Validate this window with the button
«finish».

As you have made an
inside cut, the tool trajectory is not superposed on the drawing. You may
view this dotted trajectory inside the four circles with the attributed
tool color.

Now, you are going to parametrize the outline
cut of the plaque.
In drawing selection mode, make a total
selection by using the sub-menu «select all» in the edition menu or by
using the «space bar».
This method is the fastest because no other
drawing objects remain to be parametrized.

Click on the right button, in order to open the
contextual menu. Then open the menu «describe the machining».
Select «milling tools».
Select tool 14 «double-edged tool D = 2 mm»,
then validate by the button «following».
In the next window click on «cut» in order to
get a machining depth equals to the plate thickness: «1.60 mm».
In order to get the exact dimension of the
outline, you are going to perform an outside cut.
Click on «contour» then on «outside».
Then validate with the button «following» (the
other buttons remain inactivated in this machining sequence).

The following window gives the result of the
machining expert calculations. These values will be automatically applied
for this sequence.
Validate this window with the button
«Finish».

As
you have made an outside cut, the tool trajectory is not superposed on the
drawing. You can view this dotted trajectory on the outside of the outline
with the attributed tool color.

Machining parameterizations are now finished ;
you are therefore going to start the controls and simulations before
starting the machining.
In order to make a complete check of all
parameters, CharlyGRAAL allows you to view the machining report.
Click on the icon «Machining Report» (calculator).

The window «Machining Report» displays on the
left of the screen, it will allow you to check all the machining
parameters with the view of the latter.
For each major parameter (material, speed,
depth and tools), you have the objects list and their attributions ; by
clicking on, you view them on the screen.
Click on each field, then validate with «OK».

You are now going to check the machining
sequences, i.e, the order in which they are going to be performed.
In the menu «machining» click on the sub-menu
«Sequences».

The
window «Sequence adjusting» displays on the left of the screen with the
operations list, classified from top to bottom in the curried out order.
You can view the concerned objects by clicking on the fields.

CharlyGRAAL CAM has automatically adjusted the
sequences in the most logical way, in order to facilitate the machining,
in particular, to limit tool changes. However, you can if you wish, change
this order by selecting a field and move it up or down by clicking on the
arrows (Be careful. A bad use of this function may in some cases spoils
the quality of the result.
Validate the window «sequences» with «OK».

Now you are going to make simulations before
machining.
The first simulation is the machined trace ; it
permits to see on the screen and in 2D. representation, the tool traces in
the material, proportionally to their diameter.
Click on the icon «machined trace».

After that, CharlyGRAAL offer you two other
simulation modes with 3D-representation.
Click on the simulation icon
Automatically CharlyGRAAL offer you the
machining report, as you have already controlled. Just validate by «OK».

Then, two simulation options are proposed to
you:
realist simulation
fast simulation

Realist simulation permits to see the machining
performances, on a raw, materialized with colors and shades. It is the
very faithful image of machining that will be performed on the machine.
Fast simulation permits to see on the screen
the machining in linear representation.
Advice :
NB: Al though realist simulation is more
eloquent and more pedagogical, it needs a relatively performing computer
(Pentium II or higher is recommended). Also, you can choose according to
your material.
In
this first exercise we are going to use both, but later you will choose
the simulation that suits you better.

Fast simulation :
Click on «Fast simulation»
CharlyGRAAL CAM displays the raw material in
3D. representation and reminds you the spindle speed to be used in real
machining.
Click on «OK».

The simulation starts (you can vary the
simulation speed with «+», «-» and «*» keys.
Once this simulation is finished, CharlyGRAAL
gives you an estimation of machining time.
Click on «OK».

Realist
simulation :
Click
on the button «realist simulation».
Once
in the window of realist simulation, you can choose between «part
simulation» (top button) and «machine simulation» (bottom button). You
can perform a view rotations or zooms, you can also choose the view
orientation.
Briefly,
you can parametrize your simulation !
Click
on the green button of machining, in order to start the simulation (you
can vary the speed with the cursor).
You
can cancel the simulation by clicking on the button opposite side
represented.
You
can choose between linear or realist representation by ticking the
corresponding box.
NB
: Manipulations are made in linear mode in order to simplify
graphic card calculations.
